How often should I clean my computer?

Depending on the environment a computer is will determine how often the inside should be cleaned.   The Computer Xperts recommend a three month cleaning in order to keep your system clean inside which will help it to run cooler and longer.

Can I upgrade my computer?

Some computers based on age and computer case configuration can be upgraded.   New components may require changes to more than just one other component.   There can be so many different items to change that a complete new system is more applicable and affordable.

Why can’t I run scandisk or defrag on my computer without it restarting?

Many computer systems have programs that run in the background and are transparent to most users.   One way you can run those utilities without too much complication in shutting down various programs is to start your computer in Safe Mode.   All Microsoft operating systems offer this feature.   To start in Safe Mode, you can press the F8 key before your operating system starts when you turn your computer on.   You will then a choice of boot up options and you can choose Safe Mode.   From there you can run scandisk and defrag without other background programs running.   Then simply restart once your finished and your computer will be back to Normal mode.

Can I update my virus program on-line?

Most anti virus programs can be updated on-line.   And most of the time it is cheaper to do so.   However, purchasing a copy means your getting a CD and in some cases an installation key that you can keep in a safe place.   If you buy on-line, you need to save the file you get somewhere safe and record the key (if applicable) somewhere.   The end result is you may not save yourself that much money to have an actual copy.   Often, the next year release may even offer a rebate based on a previous purchase which is not applicable to on-line purchases.

I can’t sign on to MSN yet I’m connected to the Internet, why?

Like most Internet issues, even MSN can be down for maintenance.   There can be other reasons for not being able to sign on, for example, a link between the ISP you use and MSN may be down.   Often, waiting for an hour or so, even a day can resolve the problem. There are also updates that MSN will offer and those can help to ensure you are staying connected.

How do I change the resolution on my screen?

Display options for your screen or monitor can be adjusted by right clicking on your desktop screen (make sure you’re not close to an icon) and then left click on Properties.    There are a number of different options you can change here.   To change the resolution, choose Settings at the top, and you’ll have the choice to change your colors (normally set to 16 bit or 32 bit) and resolution (800x600 and 1024x768 are common).   Click Ok or Apply and then Ok when you’re done.
